What is the Difference between Independent and Assisted Living?

  • March 28, 2019

Navigating the maze of senior living options can feel overwhelming. If you or an older adult in your life is considering a move, you might not be sure what type of care is best. Understanding the difference between independent living and assisted living communities can sometimes be a struggle.

Let’s take a look at the similarities and differences between these two popular types of senior living.

Independent Living Communities

Independent living is a good option for seniors who are interested in an active, carefree lifestyle. Because services like maintenance, landscaping, and housekeeping are usually included in monthly fees, independent living residents have more time to socialize, travel, and pursue hobbies and interests.

Unlike an assisted living community, independent living residents are usually able to manage the majority of their daily needs on their own.

Monthly fees in an independent living community typically include rent, utilities, life enrichment activities, wellness programs, maintenance and repairs, snow removal, lawn care, and transportation. Some also include meals or have an option for adding a meal plan.

Assisted Living Communities

By contrast, an assisted living community is designed for older adults who need a little extra help with the activities of daily living. Resident usually live in a private apartment or suite and have peace of mind knowing the support of a caregiver is always nearby.

Assisted living residents can receive help with medication management, bathing, grooming, and other personal care needs. Housekeeping, laundry, meals, and snacks are also provided.

Life Enrichment and Wellness Programming

Another difference between independent living and assisted living is in the types of life enrichment activities and wellness programs that are offered. Independent living communities usually offer more active programming and travel outings.

Trips for independent living residents might include traveling to a popular historic attraction in another state or even an international destination. Independent living communities also offer activities like golf leagues, tennis clubs, on-site classes, and other active programs.

Assisted living communities offer activities and wellness programs that are designed to accommodate physical changes and challenges common among seniors. Swimming, chair yoga, watercolor class, and movie nights are all popular. Outings to local malls, restaurants, and attractions are usually offered as well.
