Green Stars Program

GreenStarsLogo-sm.pngFive Star Senior Living is committed to environmental sustainability. Through our Green Stars Program—we strive to achieve results by using resources more efficiently, minimizing waste, and increasing awareness among employees and residents. The Green Stars Program follows a very simple mission: “To reduce waste, increase operational efficiency, utilize best in class methods and technology, and engage our team and our residents to create a healthier environment for seniors.”

Five Star management has partnered with AtSite, Inc., one of the nation’s premier intelligent building solutions companies, to design and implement the Green Stars Program specifically for our communities. This industry-leading program not only ensures our communities operate safely and sustainably, but that we adhere to our core principles of continually educating our employees and engaging both our residents and their families to help us achieve healthful living and sustainable lifestyles. We are now beginning to introduce the qualitative side of the program to building occupants — our Green Stars.

The Green Stars Program offers guidelines and a course curriculum to ensure that we do our part for the environment and for our residents and staff. Our communities employ environmentally sustainable business practices and products to reduce energy consumption, decrease water use and waste generation, and maintain healthy buildings. Being socially responsible about sustainability enriches the lives of staff and residents and promotes conservation of natural resources for the benefit of current and future generations.

Currently 84 of our senior living communities are using the Green Stars program and residents are enjoying those benefits. To date, we have invested in over 800 separate sustainable improvements, resulting in significantly more healthy environments for our residents. Consistent with our 3 Pillars: Health & Wellness, Warmth & Hospitality, and Dining & Nutrition, we are continually working to make our communities healthier for our residents and employees while lowering our overall energy consumption across the board and heavily reducing carbon footprint.

The Green Stars Program is centered on the following initiatives:

Health & Comfort

The most central tenet of sustainability is protecting people and enhancing quality of life. The Green Stars program creates healthier living environments by improving air quality and enhancing resident comfort through better temperature controls, improved lighting levels, and more sustainable operations.

We have implemented over 800 separate Energy, Water, and Waste improvements to reduce the environmental impact in our communities.  Our communities are trending toward becoming the most efficient communities in the country according to the EPA’s Energy Star tracker. Upgrading resident units to ENERGY STAR certified appliances & equipment is making an impact both in higher quality amenities and to the environment.

We’re committed to making our communities “smarter” by incorporating technology to increase the performance of our facilities and the efficiency of our teams. We are monitoring resource consumption in real time, utilizing best-in-class partners and applications that bring an enormous benefit to each community.

We have implemented exciting   programs to engage our team and our residents about the Green Stars Program to ensure each community accesses this benefit stream.  These programs include competitions among our employees, education of our resident communities, and Green Star Events which support our core values of collaboration and creativity.
