Five Star Standards

Five Star Standards

Above and Beyond the Required or the Expected

Federal and state regulations affect standards for senior living. Five Star communities not only strive to meet them—we strive to go beyond them.

The states have primary oversight for licensing assisted living communities and skilled health care facilities, and each state has its own regulatory framework. State agencies conduct annual unannounced surveys to determine compliance, checking everything from food preparation to training and staffing ratios—right down to light bulb wattage and milk temperature. Residences must also comply with local building and safety codes. Inspectors duly cite deficiencies, which must be corrected.

Higher Standards Across the Board

At Five Star, we’re proud that our communities receive numerous “perfect scores” on annual state surveys. But we hold ourselves to higher standards—our own.

We conduct routine surveys and intensive inspections, covering all departments, at every Five Star community. For dining and nutrition alone, we evaluate 130 separate checkpoints. Our healthcare specialists track resident experience with health and wellness goals, such as safe mobility and nutrition, to measure progress. We conduct trend surveys to make sure our Assisted Living and Skilled Health Care services go far beyond the norm.

We also survey our residents to gauge their satisfaction on a wide range of subjects, including the fine points of dining and the quality of their health care experience.

We believe compliance to all standards is everybody’s job, with zero tolerance for violations. And we never stop looking for ways to surpass ourselves in your eyes.
